INTERNET-CHINESE SOCIETY ORGANIZED
Singapore - At the pivotal 4th Global Chinese Conference
on Computers in Education, entitled "GCCCE 2000: Teaching and
Learning in the New Millennium", a group of key participants of
Internet-Chinese Workshop was inspired at the end of workshop to meet from
May 28 to June 3, to organize a society to promote the use of
Internet-Chinese script for email, Web, and other Internet applications to
facilitate East-West communication and world trade in the Chinese
language. In anticipation of new, emerging and fast-moving technologies
for wide-range applications, Internet-Chinese language technology was
designed and developed to provide the same usability and functionality as
the English language by Chinese Computer Communications, Inc.(CCC),
Lansing, Michigan, USA.
This new language technology was introduced to a
receptive audience in a workshop led by Prof. Lin Jianxiang of Peking
University. As part of the workshop, Prof. Yong Zhao of Michigan State
University discussed the potential of using Internet-Chinese to support
content development and delivery by on-line virtual universities in the
U.S. to Chinese-speaking people. In practice, Zhao Huixi, manager of
Beijing Pinxxiee Company showed the easy-to-learn and easy-to-use features
of Internet-Chinese script. For those Chinese users who do not know
English well, it is a boon to use Internet-Chinese script directly to
email and transact business on the Web.
Internet-Chinese has proved itself in 6 Beijing schools
as a superior script in efficiency and accuracy as a medium for digital
content in a number of ways:
1. Internet-Chinese, for example, like English, is
"a readable linearized script" = "yigee kkeeddude
xiaanxiing ziittii". This script simply uses the one-byte ASCII code
of Roman letters (a,b,c ... x,y,z), thus enabling alphabetic indexing and
searching without requiring database engines that are specially developed
to handle two-byte codes.
2. Internet-Chinese insures easy and reliable
transmission of Chinese content without the risk of corrupted unreadable
codes, which occur much too often with current methods on the Internet.
3. Internet-Chinese empowers readers to access Chinese
content without using specialized language platforms or software.
4. Internet-Chinese can serve easily as the Transcode
between the many different Chinese language systems on the computer, e.g.,
GB, Big5, and GBK...
After more than 25 years of R&D, Internet-Chinese
Language Technology received Certificate of Standardization in Beijing on
November 5, 1999, and was approved for immediate educational applications,
such as computer-aided instruction in national Four-Unification programs,
designed for 100,000,000 school children ages 5 to 10 in China; and for
the expanding number of Chinese-speaking Internet users on the World Wide
Web.
In focus, Internet-Chinese serves as a natural language
script for information transfer between English-speaking and
Chinese-speaking users. And users can also revert the readable the linear
Internet script back to square Chinese characters, as needed, with an
Internet-Chinese Converter.
The Internet-Chinese Society [ICS] is therefore being
formally established on June 6, 2000, to make information, software and
technology available to all potential users on the Web.
