THE TEN RULES OF STROKE ORDER   By H. C. Tien, M.D.

In Summary: All Ten Rules Are Based On One Simple Principle: 
From Left to Right, and Top to Bottom
 
as in Writing a Chinese Character  = Ten  
or an English Letter
T 
with the same TiENSTROKES lines: 
First H-stroke 
 , then L-stroke .

DEFINITION: When a writing dot moves on paper  in 1, 2 or 3 directions, 
the lifting of the pen from paper defines one of the
TiENSTROKES:

 

RULE 1. First left stroke then right. See => JLL => Stream; W => YJYJ => W.

RULE 2. From top to bottom. See => HHH => Three; T => HL => T.

RULE 3. First horizontal H-stroke, then longitudinal L-stroke. See  => HL => Ten.

RULE 4. The central topmost v-dot is always the first. See  => VHJV => Six. i => VL => i.

5. First J-stroke, then Y-stroke. See  => JY => Person; X => JY => X.

6. First Central tall J-stroke, next short left J-stroke, last tiny right V-stroke. See  => JJV => Small.

7. First outside strokes, then inside strokes. See  => JPHH => Moon. A => JYH => A.

8. First outside strokes, then insides strokes, then closing H-stroke. See  => LPHH => Sun. 

9. The low right off-center V-dot stroke is the last stroke. See  => HHLHV => Jade. 

10. the high right off-center V-dot stroke is the last stroke. See  => HLJYV => Technique.
